The 3 C’s to getting New Product Development right first time.

The 3 C's.

When developing a product for the mass market, there is three fundamental points you will need to consider Creativity, Consumer and Commercial . At Fabric-Food we refer to this as the Three C's and is the backbone to all projects we deliver.

Creativity. Whatever it is, it needs to stand out from a crowded market.

If your concept is new to market and you cannot find anything similar, then lucky you. You have probably found something. However, most of the time a new “idea” is already out there in one format or another, so how do you differentiate your offer from the competition?

Innovation which doesn't have to be weird and wacky (although that sometimes works…). A simple step change, a move forward from the current offer, can be much more targeted and just as innovative. Be it through product, how it's delivered or the need state it meets.

The Consumer. The most important part of any new product development.

There must be a consumer need for your idea. They may not know they need it yet, but their consumer purchasing habits and current social and lifestyle trends will give you a good steer. Straight forward market reviews and simple research that can be done by yourself will help sensor-check your idea. Giving you the belief there is a consumer need that your product will satisfy.

Commerciality. Commercially viable, not only for the consumer but most importantly for your business.

Your idea will ultimately be your business and it needs to make you money. With this you need to be sensible in your approach and understand from the outset what you are willing to compromise on, or not. Demand and wishes check lists are good ways to sense check this when starting out, as it will help you to achieve a product that is commercially viable for all, while still delivering something new to market, without straying too far away from the original proposition. Being commercially viable is critical more so now than ever in the cost-of-living crisis.

At Fabric-Food we sense check the three C’s constantly throughout the support we offer, to ensure your product is fit for purpose.
